Plasma spot welding

Plasma spot welding versus resistance spot welding

The use of the plasma spot welding process is of interest where resistance spot welding does not produce the desired results because of the accessibility of the material or because of the effect of shunt welding in indirect spot welding. The parts to be connected are placed overlapped. The parts are pressed together and the automatic welding process is started with the plasma welding torch. The plasma spot welding process can be performed both manually and automatically.

Application areas / Restrictions

  • As an alternative to the resistance welding where is only one-sided accessibility, eg plates on hollow body points.
  • Application e.g. fillet weld, corner weld, overlap weld
  • Max. (sensible) material thickness for overlapping seams: approx. 1.2 mm for the upper plate
  • Thanks to special point nozzles only very low gas consumption (about 2-3 liters / min)
  • The point size also largely determines the strength. The point size can be determined by the plasma nozzle size and the welding time.
  • Low distortion, high ignition reliability due to the pilot arc

Can plasma spot welding be done with the MIG-O-MAT plasmaJET machines?

Plasma spot welding is possible with all machines of the MIG-O-MAT plasmaJET series.

100% Ignition reliability without HF

The pilot arc results in 100% HF-free ignition of the main arc during plasma spot welding

High life time of the electrode

In the plasma spot welding process, the electrode is protected from spatters and evaporation by the plasma nozzle, which significantly increases the life time and the process continuity.

Significantly lower material distortion / no rework of the welding points

The higher energy density and low beam divergence of the main arc result in a significantly lower distortion of the material. Various variants of protective gas nozzles (plasma point nozzles) ensure optimum protection of the welding points. Both have the advantage that the welding points do not have to be reworked.

Plasma spot welding with one-sided workpiece accessibility

The plasma spot welding process is particularly suitable for welding several sheets of different material thicknesses, preferably of low-alloy and high-alloy steels or non-ferrous metals (except light metals) with one-sided accessibility.

With low contact pressure, the components are welded in overlapping position. In this case, it is particularly important for the quality of the welding points that the components to be welded do not have an air gap.

The applications of plasma spot welding in the stainless steel processing industry, automotive industry, machine and plant engineering, food industry, container and switch cabinet construction are numerous.

Different designs of the stainless steel nozzles are available for a wide range of applications of welding tasks such as corner, filler weld or overlap weld, and always ensure the optimum position of the welding torch to the workpiece.

Short welding times

On the basis of short welding times continuous welding points with very good reproducible quality in welding and optics are achieved.
