Plasma Welding

When does one speak of plasma welding?

Plasma welding in the push-through technique (or "soft plasma") is an extension to TIG welding. The weldable plate thicknesses are about 0.5 to 3 mm and current ratings are 20 - 250A.

Advantages compared to the TIG welding is the higher ignition reliability of the welding arc, the longer  life time of the tungsten electrode and the HF-free ignition process.

The advantage of the higher energy density of the plasma arc is particularly useful in automated applications in combination with higher welding speeds. In this case, the lower distortion and the lower prework or reworking of the workpiece also influence the process selection.

Especially in tube production (longitudinal seam welding) of small and medium batch sizes, plasma welding is an interesting alternative to other joining processes. Compared to the often used TIG welding the standstill times due to electrode exchange, the process safety and quality can be significantly increased.

Areas of application

  •      Automated plasma welding in the thickness range 0.5 - 3.0mm
  •      Longitudinal seam welding for pipe production
  •      Production of components in the automotive industry
  •      Manufacturing in the aerospace industry
